Periodontal Care
Fight back against gum disease
Periodontal Care
Gum disease is a serious (yet common) oral health issue that affects nearly half of all American adults. In its early stages, gum disease is reversible and only has relatively minor symptoms. However, without proper treatment, the condition will worsen over time and may eventually lead to premature tooth loss and permanent damage to your teeth and gums. With proper periodontal care from Dr. Larsen at Elevate Dental Wellness, you can protect your smile and treat gum disease.
Preventing Gum Disease
Our tips and advice
Gum disease is caused by poor oral hygiene, though other risk factors may be involved. This condition occurs when plaque and bacteria begin to build up between your gums and your teeth, causing an infection of the gums.
The best way to avoid this common oral health issue is to care for your mouth properly. Brush at least twice a day for two minutes. An electric toothbrush may make it easier to remove plaque from around your gums. Flossing at least once per day is also essential to remove any food debris and plaque from between your teeth. Additional oral hygiene steps like using a water flosser (WaterPik) and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash can also help prevent gum disease.
It is also important to visit Dr. Larsen at Elevate Dental Wellness every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning. Our team can check for signs of gum disease, if present, and clean your teeth and gums thoroughly to help prevent gum disease from forming in your mouth.
Deep Cleaning
If you do develop gum disease, Dr. Larsen is here to help with compassionate, judgment-free care. We offer deep cleaning, also known as scaling & root planing. This treatment consists of using special dental tools to remove plaque and bacteria from between your gums and teeth, and to smooth the roots of your teeth and eliminate bacteria buildup.
Root planing is the process in which any area of the tooth root that is infected by bacteria is cleaned. The treatment involves removing plaque and tartar and smoothing the root of the tooth where it sits beneath the gum line.
